Historical Archive takes us back to November 1988 and the Morris Worm, the first worm to spread across the Internet. Robert Morris, a Cornell graduate student, wrote a program meant to gauge the size of the Internet, but a coding error caused it to reinfect machines repeatedly, bringing down roughly ten percent of the Internet at the time—about six thousand computers. The worm exploited vulnerabilities in sendmail, the finger daemon, and weak passwords, causing somewhere between a hundred thousand and ten million dollars in damage. Morris became the first person convicted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, receiving probation, community service, and a fine. The incident led to the creation of the first Computer Emergency Response Team and fundamentally shaped how we think about responsible disclosure and cascading failures in networked systems—lessons that remain rather relevant thirty-eight years on.
